Indonesia, Micronesia agree to expand bilateral ties in various arrays

JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with visiting President of the Federated States of Micronesia Peter Christian here Wednesday, with both sides discussing bilateral cooperation in maritime and connectivity, economy, diplomatic and education sectors.

After the meeting, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on free visa agreement for officials of the two nations holding diplomatic passports.

Indonesia would also appoint an honorary consulate to Micronesia to boost bilateral diplomatic ties. Currently Indonesia's diplomatic affairs with Micronesia is handled by its embassy in Tokyo.

"My meeting with President Christian serves as the cornerstone to deepen relations between the two countries into mutually beneficial, respect to each other," President Widodo said on the sidelines of his meeting wi th the visiting Micronesian president.

Bilateral cooperation in four sectors, comprise of maritime and connectivity, economy, diplomatic and education, have been agreed in the meeting between the two delegations, he added.

Indonesia invites Micronesian businessmen to take part in Indonesia's trade and commodity expos.

In education sector, Widodo offered scholarships to Micronesian students to study in Indonesia.

Christian is the first Micronesian president to visit Indonesia after the two nations set up diplomatic relations 27 years ago.
